Runners Blogging About Their Series Experience

I have added a Feedback page to the site, so if you may have been on the proverbial fence about racing, you can pay witness to testimonial that there are runners of all abilities making positive comments about their race experiences.

There are a few blogs and facebook pages here and there with personal stories and photos about the series. Below are sample blog posts. I have linked you directly to the post-in-question and that is all you see – THAT particular post. I did this so that as the particular posts become dated within the blogger’s blog-site and moves on down through the order – you will see the story, anyways. BUT these people are always updating, so if you like their posts, just delete all parts of their URL in the address bar that comes after: ‘.com’ and you will see their regular, scheduled blogging.

Don’t laugh, not everybody knows this.

Meet # 8 – 5000m

The final meet of the series, Saturday, August 21st was yet another fun night down at the track. We had Maurice Tarrant put aside his own interests in taking a 5th Canadian age-group record at the series and instead pace a training mate, Les McNeil for a few laps, before putting the hammer down. He did! And he continued on for a BC Provincial age-group record and close to a Canadian record as well – the current age-group record may be removed form the books – it is under review – which is 23:37, Maurice finished in 24:16.4 – an age-group personal best for himself. Congratulations to Maurice in his 4 Canadian age-group records that he accomplished during the series, nearly a world record in the mile and this BC record in the 5000m.

We also had excellent runs by many others – perhaps too many to name here however, Marcia Stromsmoe ran very strong, Shawn Nelson ran a very big personal best to get to near 15:00-flat. Lucy Smith raced, again nearly a Canadian age-group record, although competing in a mixed, Male/Female race the record would not have counted, but she did lead from lap 2, taking over from eventual second place finisher Michael Lord.

The show of the night was Jim Finlayson and James Lander who duked it out over the final few meters, Lander nipped Finlayson by .6 of a second at the line – 14:45.3 to 14:45.9.

To start the race, Finlayson was drawn out by pacer Trevor O’Brien ( who ran for approximately 2000 of the 5000m). Finlayson had a good lead for sometime, until Lander began to close the gap during the final few laps. He made his biggest gains in the final 400m. It was a very exciting finish!

There were 3 races, all of the 5000m distance. The first race was for athletes who were seeded to likely finish over 20:00 minutes. Richard Bellizz and Don Moffat were the only runners under 20:00 – Bellizz won in 19:30.3 he held his lead throughout, Don Moffatt squeezed under 20 with his furious kick ending it with a 19:59.9.

The second race was for those capable of running 17:00 to 2o:00. Lucy Smith won in 16:59.2 and saw a reluctant Simon Pearson run just for fun as he tries to get back into shape after being down with injury, he finished in 19:31.0 – smiling. Michael Lord ran a 17:17.0 for second and Jeremy Watts 17:29.2 for third place.

Craig Odermatt was the top male master on the night with his finish in 15:32.1.

The night saw a return to action by possibly the most talented athlete on the field, Ryan McKenzie who has an international-class 5000m personal best of 13:30 – he ran for 3000m before dropping out with a mild injury.

Better Register Now.

Ok so there is the real possibility that there will be a need to run two OPEN races. BC Athletics does not want more than 16 on the track at once and we are at 29 pre-registered Open-Mixed runners currently.

Some of these people are permanent no-shows, but still…

So there is a real likelihood of:

6:30 PM – Open-Mixed 1.
7:05 PM – Open-Mixed 2.
7:30 PM – Men’s Elite.

It appears there are not enough elite women around for this race so they will go in the 2nd section.

This also means if you are an Open-Mixed runner and you want in, you best register online right now or show up as I am not running a 3rd Open-Mixed race, there is not enough daylight.

The elite cat. could hit the limit too…if you plan to register on the day, then email me today – info@victoriatrackseries.ca and let me know if you are going to be there by 6:00 PM to pay and get your bib.

By the way 6:00 has always been the deadline sort of speak, nothing new, I just might need to use it this time.

Michael Lord on his Q’s Victoria Track Series race.

There are certain events in life where familiarity or experience can help bread a sense of calm. Competing in the mile isn’t one of them. And so it was that on a warm Saturday evening in late July, I found myself again pacing nervously, almost painfully as I waited to be called to the line.

CRACK!

Meet # 6

The Q’s Victoria Track Series meet number 6 that happened Saturday, July 31st included two distances, 800m and the classic mile with a total of 4 races, Open – Mixed 800m and Men’s Elite 800m – the same for the 1 mile distance.

Willy Langat won the men’s elite mile in a time of 4:31.3 followed by Nick Walker in 4:38.6 and Keith Mills with his finishing time of 4:44.9.

In the open mile event Michael Lord won handily with his time of 5:00.6, Jim Barwise and Buddy Bhandar followed. There was no contest as Lord took the lead immediately and pulled away to a convincing win.

In the open 800m Chris Callender also pulled to an early lead and hung on to win in a very good time for him, followed  by Brett McCullough and Jim Barwise. Barwise ran two races on the evening.

In the elite 800m there were just 3 competitors, John Pratt beat Willy Langat by 2:00.2 to 2:01.9, third was Nick Walker with is 2:06.2 – Langat and Walker raced twice on the evening. That was Willy’s second defeat, as he has finished first in all other meet races to date.

David Guss from Calgary, Alberta who raced the men’s mile, ran what is a pending, Alberta provincial record with his 4:48.7. Both him and Paul O’Callaghan were attempting their own two separate provincial age-group record – the Canadian record is 4:39.

The next track meet is August 14, followed by August 21st and the awards night and silent auction at the Sticky Wicket Pub, Sunday August 22nd.

Will Two Records Fall this Saturday?

Maurice Tarrant is 80-years of age, but that has not slowed him much. He has taken down 4 consecutive Canadian age-group records in 4 attempts during The Q’s Victoria Track Series, will attempt another record this Saturday, bettering his own mile record from July 17th. He was not too far off the world record. Perhaps if everything goes to plan, he can take the world record. THAT would be exciting.

GO MAURICE!

Also, Paul O’Callaghan who has run sub-5:00 a couple times recently is looking to take down the Provincial (BC) 45-49 age-group record, which (will have to check) may be currently held by ex-Brit, Mike Creery at 4:38.

This Saturday, may be a very short evening as the two race distances are, 800m and 1 mile – pretty short!

Be sure to check out the silent auction page and the growing list of silent auction items that are indicated there. Silent Auction proceeds go to the Mustard Seed food Bank – this will happen Sunday August 22nd at the Sticky Wicket – with series awards night.
